Today is a big day (pt 1) – 3 Day Fast

coffeeToday is a big day. Several weeks ago my dear friend Tiffany Crawford shared her experience with doing a 21 day fast and then challenged others to join her in a 3 day fast on July 1, 2, & 3. I’ve never developed the spiritual discipline of fasting, but I resonated with her deep desire to experience more reliance on God and less on self.

To cut out things we usually turn to (like caffeine and sweets and excess everything to distract and fill our minds and bodies) and instead to turn to Jesus in those moments.

She listed specific pressing needs (some publicly, some privately) and asked people to pray with her while she fasted the 21 days. During and after the fast she described her experience of Christ’s presence and love and grace and power at work. Authenticity and passion combined are contagious, so Tiffany got my attention. Her testimony was a compelling call to fast, especially at times when we earnestly seek God’s provision and direction.

I’m at that point where I need focused prayer (see pt 2 of this post) and heightened awareness for seeking God’s voice and action, so I joined the group of people responding, “I’m in!” making a commitment to fast for 3 days. I’m nervous and eager at the same time. I’d love and appreciate if you would say a prayer for me and share any encouragements as you are led.

Hebrews 12:1-3

Discipline in a Long-Distance Race

Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!

You can do it. The fear of hunger is much worse than hunger itself. I did it when working through Foster’s workbook on disciplines , spending about a week with each one. The only revelation I had was that my fear of hunger was unfounded. That was enough. I pray that God will bless you greatly.

I always appreciate your wisdom and hearing about your experiences and insights. I remember working through that book years ago. Then I met him last year at the Festival of Faith and Writing. He had a humble and caring countenance and left a lasting impression upon me.
